SCD for 2 years and beyond

Hi my 12 yo son has ulcerative colitis and has been on SCD for about 20 months, no symptoms, no meds and no signs of inflammation. We don't make the yogurt because he just doesn’t tolerate dairy. We use ghee. He takes the VSL3 probiotic. I know it is not legal but it has replenished his gut bacteria, which was completely depleted at the time of his diagnosis. We are taking a trip to Italy and I’m nervous. Any suggestions? Also how do you suggest introducing foods in September. Scd wasn’t intended to be forever.

Read Breaking the Vicious Cycle (BTVC). They also have a website. I think Wellbee's does an excellent job of guiding you through the stages. I also got information from the website pecanbread. In BTVC, Elaine states that the diet is recommended for 2 years. Based on my research, some come off of SCD, and have a recurrence of symptoms, so they go back on SCD. Others are able to advance and add illegal items.

SCD was intended for approx 2 years. However, every case is different, some need it longer. The goal is to be a full year symptom free and med free before introducing illegals. Now, here's the important part: if you go ahead and go back onto the SAD, then a recurrence of symptoms may happen. The best method is to go onto a Paleo based diet (where you can have healthy grains: quinoa, kasha, etc, sweet potatoes, and many other healthy things that are not allowed on the SCD). Sticking to a healthy program is super important, as you always have to remember that your intestines are more sensitive, and you don't want to aggravate it.

Thanks so much! We are done with the SAD. My son loved quinoa. I’m looking forward to seeing if he can tolerate that and or sweet potatoes. Just looking forward to more variety but we are done with processed foods, as well as dairy and soy. Thanks again

Hi Dee,\n\nI’ll be traveling to Italy as well and was hoping you had some tips / advice since you’ve gone. Any suggestions or information you can share on traveling through Italy while adhering to the diet? What did you do for food, restaurants, shabbosim etc?\nAll input appreciated if anyone else has been to Italy .
