I went off medicine for awhile, so I thought it was a good idea to start at the beginning. I'm not quite sure about weight gain. I did gain weight, but I had also just come to a stable place after months in and out of the hospital, so I'm not sure how much weight gain was from the diet and how much was from my gut being calmed down (I was on Remicade at first). I managed my Crohn's for several years with just the diet. I had a bad flare this summer, so I am now on Humira, but I continue to follow SCD. I figure if those are the foods that are really good for my gut, I should keep eating them instead of just relying on the Humira! I was 12-13 when I was in the hospital and at one point I only weighed 72 lbs. Now I am at a normal weight and height. (Well, I'm only 5 ft 4 in., but I have two really short Grandma's For me, I lose weight when my gut is inflamed, so I guess the starting point is to get that calmed down. Sometimes the only way to get inflammation under control is to start with medicine.
I was really anemic with my flare-up this summer. Iron pills only aggravated it (even the SCD legal chelated ones).
I had several iron infusions to get back to a normal place, and once I got my inflammation back under control (through Humira this time), my iron levels are now normal on their own.
I think the food on the diet is very nourishing, if weight gain is needed butter, cheese, meat, nuts etc... are good to eat.
